Southwest Virginia Company Develops Technology to Recycle, Reuse Pollutants
Bristol, VA. — Southwest Virginia leaders have plans to expand a stronghold in the energy industry.
A new project that could recycle harmful emissions from coal-fired power plants and other sources for reuse around the world is in development right now.
Energy has long been a driver for southwest Virginia, known as the 'coalfields' for a reason. Leaders are trying to find new ways to lead beyond that declining industry.
“We’re creating projects that redefine energy in southwest Virginia, how we use it and how we produce it. It’s about thinking big," Will Payne said. Payne is part of the Southwest Virginia Energy Research and Development Authority.
One of the initiatives he is closely monitoring is Project Revolution. Many details are being kept secret, but one company is emerging as a leader.
“MOVA Technologies’ pollution filtration system is innovation at its finest. With their technology, Project Revolution is going to help change the world. We can help do that with southwest Virginia ingenuity," Payne said.
The company is based in Pulaski with a plan to recycle pollutants for other uses.
“Dirty gas enters the filters, and they’re forced over the bed of solid sorbents," Luke Allison with MOVA Technologies said over a Zoom call with the authority.
The company has been working with Virginia Tech to design the technology that removes pollutants that are reused for items like cement, fertilizers, paper products, and paint.
“About 90 percent of our total investors are from southwest Virginia, and those are the people who will benefit," Allison said.
“This project is about building on our region’s long history of energy production in order to grow our economy. By taking an all-of-the-above approach, southwest Virginia has the opportunity to be the energy innovation capital of the East Coast," Payne said.
The company is working with the Southwest Virginia Energy Research and Development Authority, created last year, to move forward with marketing the technology.
